Risk of PAH in CHD

PAH is a severe and progressive disease1-3

  • PAH is caused by restricted flow through the pulmonary arteries, leading to increased PVR, and ultimately, right heart failure and death1
  • Some conditions may predispose patients to PAH, including CHD3
  • CHD may be diagnosed at birth but sometimes is not detected until childhood or adulthood4

About 1 in 10 adult patients
with CHD may develop PAH5
Risk of PAH in CHD patients

PAH can develop any time after a CHD repair3

However, some factors put adult patients with CHD at increased risk of PAH6

Women have a higher risk of developing PAH-CHD6

People with atrial septal defects and ventricular septal defects may develop PAH6

Prevalence of PAH-CHD in Asian, Hispanic, and White patients in the REVEAL Registry7*

22%
Asian
(n=22/100)
15%
Hispanic
(n=39/263)
10%
White
(n=217/2202)
*The prevalence of PAH-CHD in Black patients was 3.3% (n=13/393) and 6.8% (n=6/88) in patients who were categorized as other.7

Risk of mortality in patients with PAH-CHD8

  • In a retrospective study of 192 patients with PAH, 65% of patients with PAH after a CHD repair survived 10 years after diagnosis
  • The average age of patients after a CHD repair was 36 ± 17 years
